Perhaps the best example of how local folk provide for their own needs is Norfolk and north Suffolk's, cancer charity, The Big C. Based in Norwich, this purely local charity has raised over ?11 million since it was launched in 1980.

Big C is Norfolk & Waveney's local independent cancer charity. Started twenty six years ago, the charity awards grants for research into cancer, equipment, and the care & support of local people affected by cancer. Big C's largest project was the building of the Big C Family Cancer Information and Support Centre situated at the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital,which opened in May 2006

The Hawk and Owl Trust, Sculthorpe Moor Community Nature Reserve

Sculthorpe Moor is the first Hawk & Owl Trust Nature Reserve, and the newest in Norfolk. Situated in the Upper Wensum Valley of the A148 just outside Fakenham. The Reserve is a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest', consisting of Reedbed, Valley Fen, Alder Carr and Woodland with a rich bio-diversity of Flora and Fauna.
