Most people long for tranquillity, a garden they are happy to be in; such is Gooderstone Water Gardens.
Billy Knights, a retired farmer, with no training in gardening or garden design, but with great enthusiasm, began his garden in 1970, according to his own taste. His likes and dislikes were not dictated by fashion.
When he died aged 93 in 1994 he left behind an entrancing 6-acre garden that sits comfortably in the Norfolk countryside. From the natural stream he created four ponds and flowing waterways spanned by thirteen bridges. With its additional 8-acre Nature Trail and Kingfisher hide it's truly a haven for people and wildlife.
Combining native and cultivated plants in informal beds, his daughter Coral is endeavouring to further enhance this atmospheric garden.
From the many well placed seats visitors can enjoy vistas and the changing moods of the sky reflected in the clear spring water. And the homemade cakes are delicious!
