The community and Parish of Old Catton lies about 3 miles to the
north of the City of Norwich in the County of Norfolk, United
Kingdom. It also sits on the eastern edge of Norwich International
Airport. Some say that Old Catton is now just a suburb of Norwich;
having been largely joined up by a rapid expansion of housing
development from Norwich. However, many people in Old Catton still
regard it as a village and there is a strong sense of village and
community life here. It remains a popular destination for people
looking for somewhere to live, possibly due to factors such as good
public transport links, plenty of green spaces and a good selection
of schools and essential shops. Ever increasing volumes of traffic
and road congestion is one of the biggest concerns for local
residents and it will be interesting to see what effect the
proposed Northern Distributor Road (NDR) and further expansion of
Norwich International Airport will have on Old Catton in the years
to come.
The earliest history of Old Catton seems to date back to the Stone
Age, as evidenced by archaeological finds and subsequent
discoveries point to Bronze Age and Roman habitation. But much of
our documented history begins in 1086 with the publication of the
Domesday Book. More detailed information about the history of Old
Catton can be found elsewhere within this website, or by contacting
the Old Catton Society.
Old Catton covers an area of 211 hectares (approximately 475 acres)
and in 2001, it had a population of 5,934 people. In 2005, 5,013
of this number were registered as eligible to vote. The fact that
so many people who live in Old Catton are of voting age would
suggest that Old Catton is not a "young" place!
The Old Catton recreation ground is located just off Church Street
behind the junior school. This large green space comprises of
parking, a pavilion, a children's play area, a tennis court, a lawn
bowling
green and football pitches in the winter and a cricket pitch in the
summer. It is also the location of the new multi user games area
(MUGA). The recreation ground is open every day until dusk or 9pm,
whichever is sooner. For more information, please contact the
Parish Council.
Catton Park is a nationally important green space on the southern
of edge Old Catton. Originally the private grounds of Catton Hall;
this great country park was Humphry Repton's first paid commission.
Today, the park is being regenerated and restored to something of
its former glory. In October 2007 it was formally opened as a
public park for the people of Norwich and beyond to enjoy this
historic, green and peaceful place.
