About Strumpshaw Fen Nature Reserve

This reserve has the full range of broadland habitats and wildlife. Walk round the reedbeds, woodlands and orchid-rich meadows and you could chance upon marsh harriers, bitterns and kingfishers. Come in spring and summer when the meadows bloom with flowers, and see an array of dragonflies and butterflies, including the spectacular swallowtail.

There's plenty for children to do, with activity rucksacks available, and a range of guided walks for birdwatching beginners and old hands too. As well as the three hides, the reserve has a wheelchair-accessible viewing point.

Visiting Strumpshaw Fen requires crossing a railway line at the entrance. Please use the pedestrian gates to cross the line and look carefully to make sure no trains are coming before crossing. Children should be supervised closely. If you are infirm or have mobility difficulties, please avoid crossing alone or use the phone at the gate to check with the signal operator that no trains are coming. Please also use the phone before crossing if you are visiting as a large group and will take time to cross.
